SCRIMSHAW ART by Matt Stothart |
Throughout the Pacific, and also in Nantucket, and new Bedford, and Sag Harbor, you will come across lively sketches of whales and whaling-scenes, graven by the fishermen themselves on Sperm Whale-teeth, or ladies' busks wrought out of the Right Whale-bone, and other like skrimshander articles, as the whale-men call the numerous little ingenious contrivances they elaborately carve out of the rough material, in their hours of ocean leisure.
Herman Melville in Moby Dick
Though I am a landlubber and I come to scrimshaw as an artist rather than one of Melville's "white savage sailor-men", I have been dedicated to this "wonderful patience of industry' for the past twenty-five years. This Web site is primarily a catalogue of my work and I plan to continually update and add images. I hope you enjoy viewing the galleries and feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you have.
